The count down is on for palo duro. This will be my first 50 miler and I'm
kinda getting worried. Will I make the cut off? That's not really a
question, but anyway. I was just curious how many taturs are going to be
there that I can encourage and be encouraged by?

Dear Nikki,
I envy you going to Palo Duro, it's one of my favourite ultras. I'd recommend camping in the canyon if you can. I went last year for Big Red's Memorial, even though it was 3 weeks before Mother Road. I only did the 50 km though. It had rained a lot in the previous week (unusual) and everything was green. We were supposed to camp for a few days and do some hiking but my wife was ill and didn't come so I just did the race and came home. I ran a lot with a friend Joe Pruisitis who also really shouldn't have been there but wanted to attend the memorial.
It's really easy to go too fast in the first 12.5 loop so try to hold back. Now that the race starts in the dark it should be easier. When I ran the 50 miler in 1999 I didn't know the fellow I was running with was a local, planning to only do one loop. I sufferred in the last half.
The weather can be very changable. It was freezing at the start in 1999 but I forced myself to put on sunscreen. The temperature went way up and it was really sunny in afternoon. I'm really glad I did.
Have a great time,

I know that Glen and Aaron are going. _________________ Brian Hoover

I had planned on going but then I started coaching my daughter's youth soccer so Saturday's are out for October. So I will be running on that Sunday at the Dogwood Canyon 50K.
It being your first 50M, just enjoy it. It is really just a matter of staying on your feet and having the determination to continue moving. It may get tough at times during the race, but when it is over, I almost always look back and think that it really wasn't quite that bad and it was a whole lot of fun! Like the first marathon, you only get to do your first 50M once so savor every minute of it. |

Thanks for the encouraging words Tom. The closer it gets the more nervous I get. I hope I have trained properly.

Patience. start slow, stay relaxed, enjoy the moment. Like Tom said, you only get to do your first 50 miler once.
Just keep moving forward.
